Water gardens, whether large or small, have a unique allure that can transform any outdoor space into a serene oasis. One of the most captivating aquatic plants that can elevate the beauty of these water gardens is the waterlily. With their delicate petals and vibrant colors, waterlilies add a touch of elegance and tranquility to any water feature.

Planting waterlilies in a container is a great way to enjoy these beautiful plants, even if you don't have a large pond. It allows you to control the environment and ensure that the waterlilies thrive. Here are some easy step - by - step instructions to help you plant waterlilies in a container:

Step 1: Choose the Right Container

The first step is to select an appropriate container. It should be large enough to accommodate the waterlily's root system. A container with a diameter of at least 18 inches is recommended for most waterlily varieties. Make sure the container has no drainage holes, as waterlilies need to be submerged in water.

Step 2: Select the Right Waterlily Variety

There are many different varieties of waterlilies available, each with its own unique characteristics. Some are better suited for small containers, while others are more suitable for larger ponds. When choosing a waterlily, consider factors such as the size of your container, the amount of sunlight your water garden receives, and the color and shape of the flowers you prefer.

Step 3: Prepare the Soil

Waterlilies grow best in heavy, loamy soil. You can purchase special aquatic soil from a garden center or make your own by mixing equal parts of topsoil and clay. Fill the container about two - thirds full with the soil. Gently firm the soil down to remove any air pockets.

Step 4: Plant the Waterlily

Carefully remove the waterlily from its nursery pot. Inspect the roots and trim any damaged or overly long roots. Place the waterlily in the center of the container, spreading the roots out evenly over the soil. Cover the roots with a layer of soil, leaving the crown of the plant (where the leaves and stems emerge) slightly above the soil surface.

Step 5: Add Gravel

To prevent the soil from floating away and to keep the water clean, add a layer of gravel on top of the soil. A layer about 1 - 2 inches thick is sufficient. The gravel also helps to anchor the waterlily in place.

Step 6: Submerge the Container

Slowly lower the container into your water garden. The water level should be about 6 - 12 inches above the soil surface. If you're starting with a new water garden, make sure the water is at room temperature to avoid shocking the waterlily.

Step 7: Provide Adequate Sunlight

Waterlilies need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to bloom. Place your container in a sunny spot in your water garden. If your water garden is in a shaded area, you may need to consider using artificial lighting to supplement the sunlight.

Step 8: Maintain the Water Quality

Regularly check the water quality in your water garden. Waterlilies prefer clean, still water. You may need to change the water every few weeks, especially if it becomes cloudy or has a strong odor. You can also add a water treatment product to keep the water clean and free of algae.

Once your waterlilies are planted and established, you'll be rewarded with beautiful blooms throughout the growing season. The colors of waterlily flowers can range from pure white to deep red, and their fragrance can fill the air around your water garden. They also provide a habitat for beneficial insects and small aquatic creatures, adding to the ecological balance of your water garden.

In addition to their aesthetic appeal, waterlilies also have some practical benefits. They help to oxygenate the water, which is essential for the health of fish and other aquatic life. Their large leaves provide shade, which can help to keep the water temperature down and reduce the growth of algae.

Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a beginner, planting waterlilies in a container is a fun and rewarding project. It allows you to bring the beauty of a water garden into your own backyard, no matter how small the space. So, why not give it a try and see how these lovely aquatic plants can transform your outdoor environment?
